Will future digital currencies – such as Central Bank Digital Currencies – cause problems for the survival of traditional banks or will they adapt and profit from them as they currently are profiting from cryptocurrencies? What will the future of money look like? Will banks and other conventional financial institutions create their own digital currency systems and thrive? Will governments and central banks use the new distributed technologies to produce digital copies of their fiat currencies? If so, will CBDCs be made broadly available to individuals or reserved for wholesale usage, like interbank transfers? Is it conceivable that new open networks that allow issuers and investors, borrowers and lenders, and other participants to transact with each other directly and without middlemen would emerge? Would the current banking establishment and governments allow such a development? Are governments delaying CDBCs to protect the established system?
